Video – The death penalty in Malaysia (2023)
Following the abolition of the mandatory death penalty in 2023, more than 900 individuals on death row who had exhausted their ordinary legal appeals have had a chance to seek a review of their sentence. The Federal Court of Malaysia began hearing resentencing applications in November 2023. Thus far, 835 death sentences have been reversed after review and replaced with life imprisonment - between 30 and 40 years (and whipping for male convicts depending on the crime). ADPAN and ECPM encourage the Malaysian government to take further steps towards the total abolition of the death penalty, including abolishing capital punishment for drug-related offences.
