The CTCPM was established in response to the call made at the World Congress Against the Death Penalty in Paris in February 2007, which encouraged abolitionists to organise at national and regional levels. The National Coalition focuses its activities on Tunisia and is engaged in research and actions to abolish the death penalty in the country. Its charter states that the National Coalition’s objective is to "achieve the abolition of the death penalty in [its] country, […] by coordinating actions to promote a broad citizen movement in favour of abolition and by working with the authorities to ensure that [its] country joins the ranks of abolitionist states."
