2026: towards new abolitionist victories

As we begin 2026, which promises to be an eventful year with the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty in Paris, the entire ECPM team wishes you a verry happy new year! Our association will continue its international advocacy, awareness-raising and fight against the death penalty, with the aim of achieving new abolitionist achievements.

I am delighted to be back with you after a particularly eventful year of campaigning for the universal abolition of the death penalty.

Throughout the year, our association has continued its tireless advocacy work with governments and international institutions, as well as its efforts to raise awareness of human rights and oppose the death penalty, both in France and internationally.

As we look ahead to 2026, important opportunities are opening up for our association and for the entire abolitionist movement. The coming year will be marked by a major event: the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty, to be held in Paris from June 30 to July 2, 2026, following on from the Regional Congress held last November in Japan. This international event, organised every three years since 2001, will be an opportunity to celebrate 25 years of World Congresses and to assess the progress made, the challenges ahead and the strategies to be implemented to accelerate universal abolition.

The 5th Regional Congress on the Death Penalty in East Asia, organized by Ensemble contre…

The Paris Congress promises to be a powerful moment of political and activist mobilisation, bringing together actors from around the world — activists, lawyers, politicians, diplomats and civil society organisations — to exchange ideas, debate and collectively commit to a world without the death penalty.

In addition to this international event, ECPM continues to develop other projects and initiatives, including editorial and cultural activities aimed at strengthening our impact and broadening the audience for the abolitionist cause.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all those who bring our association to life:

Our volunteers, whose commitment is an essential driving force for our work.
Our staff, for their professionalism, creativity and unwavering determination.
The management committee and our directors, for their strategic vision and constant support.
Our members, for their trust, loyalty and commitment to our cause.

Together, we continue to work for a fairer world, respectful of human rights and free from the death penalty.

With my deepest gratitude and best wishes for 2026.
